The Night Before

June 6, 2010

Janelle and I flew to St. Louis to meet up with Jenny on June 2. Since then the three of us have been running around getting last minute bits of equipment – it’s amazing how much stuff you have to buy in order to have the smallest amount of stuff. At long last, we have cobbled together everything we need and are ready to put the rubber to the road!

We are each equipped with a back rack, two back panniers (saddle bags) which will hold most of our things. Janelle has a heavy-duty handlebar bag for her Hasselblad camera with which she will be taking magical pictures of our journey. Jenny and I have frame bags for things we want to be easily accessible (which pretty much means we will be using our frame bags almost entirely for snacks). Sleeping bags, pads and tent will be strapped on top of our racks or in between our handlebars. When all is said and done, we are each carrying about 25 lbs. I am tempted to gloat that our bikes don’t feel too heavy, but I’ll get back to you on that once we’ve ridden a few hundred miles.

In addition to many, more necessary pieces of gear, we are bringing a set of double-dutch ropes, embroidery thread, scrabble letters, and face paints. So when we run out of food and water we will at least be prepared to throw a birthday party for an eight year old girl. We are also bringing a long list of addresses of friends and family so that we can send gifts and cards that we find and make!

We are excited and hopeful, and ready, after months of preparation, to see what we can see. Wish us luck!
