Bugs and Doug

June 9, 2010

After three long days with only intermittent cell phone service, we are finally able to write about our first one hundred miles! It’s been rough, no doubt, but certainly better than I expected, having “forgotten” to train for this giant mega adventure.
Day 1- Saint Louis, MO to Augusta, MO
Started out pretty tough. I’m willing to argue that Ladue is as hilly as San Francisco – or at least it feels that way when you’re hauling 30 pounds on a bike. But once we got to the Katy Trail and met up with Stephen, our temporary bike expert / positive reinforcement / Jenny’s buddy from Saint Louis, things were much better. Except for the Mosquitos, which have apparently resolved to devour us alive. Also, Stephen hit a goose.
Day 2- Augusta, MO to Bluffton, MO
The mosquito feast continued and we encountered some rain. Actually, a lot of rain. After stopping to get Jenny a beer in Hermann, MO (she takes after her dad), it started pouring – lightning and all. We booked it to Bluffton, where we stayed in the backyard of Rendelman House – a B&B run by Doug Rendelman, who saved us from mosquito-induced madness and let us use his barn shower, outhouse, and tent mansion [angel chorus here]. No, really, it was heaven. Fell asleep to a symphony of fireflies and lightning.
Day 3- Bluffton, MO to Hartsburg, MO
No rain! Got a sunny funburn, though. (Scratch that, reverse it.) After making it to Portland (psyche!) and meeting a lot of cyclists along the trail, we wound up in Hartsburg, MO. We set up camp in a gazeebo! A gazeebo next to a caboose! Tomorrow we’ll check out Dottie’s Cafe for breakfast and ride to Pilot Grove, MO. Stay tuned for Steven’s super special guest blog post soon!

FUN FACT:
110. 534. One number is the population of Hartsburg. One is our cumulative bug bite tally. We’ll let you guess which is which.

JJ! Only 3 days in and you’ve already had loads of adventures! Did you sleep in the barn or in a tent? Did you bring a tent? What a hoot!

Phil’s GMA quote of the day:

“This is a pedigree group of riders, they are holding on by the skin of their shorts”

I’m charting your progress on a map. Jen — flying 2 meet your elders tomorrow in Chicago. Angels vs. Cubs @ Wrigley Field on Friday. Hope the weather improves, the bugs all die, & it’s all downhill tomorrow. Good luck with that. Luv u. Uncle Dave
