Golden City, We Love You

June 15, 2010

Yesterday morning, a full 40 minutes after Jenny’s disco-synth phone alarm sounded, we roused ourselves and pulled open the shades. Looking out onto a grey sky and rainsoaked parking lot we were again convinced the sun would never return. The El Dorado Cafe shone line a beacon of light (and breakfasty goodness) in the distance…the very close distance…just past the Sonic and Subway. We suited up like the sports team we wish we were, in our near-matching rainpants and coats and made the 2 minute trek.

Just as soon as we sat down, a cowboy-hatted older gentleman, who we later came to know as Wilbur, inquired “car trouble?”. He told us about his WILDLY successful fireworks business (“got three registers goin’ just as fast as they can”) and his porto-potty delivery business (goin’ on a run to get one right now”). He dared us to finish the “ranch hand” platters that we ordered and to try and spell his last name, which was French. He also told me that I looked like Jenny and Janelle’s mom…thanks, Wilbur.

Well all that talking and we just plain forgot about the rain. Turns out the rain forgot about us too! We walked back to our motel room with bellies full of biscuits, gravy, pancakes, eggs, sausage and hashbrowns to pack up our things and ride bikes!

The 40 miles from El Dorado Springs, MO to Golden City, MO (where we pick up the ACA routes) was hilly but had nothing on the previous day’s 60 mile ride. We were hoping that Golden City would be like Emerald City; turns out it’s even better! No, they don’t have a field of poppies or a hovering, bodiless wizard, but they do have a grocery store that’s open ’til 8 and free camping and showers at the city park. Mmm. Luxury.

We were warned repeatedly about a storm on it’s way from Kansas so we set up camp on the stage in the park pavillion and partied hard. The rain didn’t hit us until 5:30am and was over by 7:30am. Sadly, no one showed up for our on-stage camping performance piece.

Stopped on the way out at Cooky’s Cafe for a slice (or 4) of post-breakfast pie!

Phil’s GMA quote of the day:

“They have added another page to this fairy tale that just keeps going on.”
