Kansas Shmansas

June 17, 2010

In case you haven’t heard…we made it to Kansas! And so far, we have mixed reviews. Our first stop was in Girard, a charming, small, still Walmart-less town, where they let cyclists swim and camp for free, the police officer on duty comes to say hello personally, and mosquitos don’t exist. Golden City: you have a rival for best town so far.
Next up was Chanute (pronounced “Shan-oot”). After a pretty pleasant ride, we pulled into a campground on the outskirts of town. Several minutes later, a Hormel-chili-scarfing creepo sat down right in the middle of our equipment…and wouldn’t leave. We packed everything back up and booked it to a hotel. Laundry, air-conditioning, and a multi-course meal cooked entirely in hotel room appliances never tasted so good. Who knew you could boil eggs in a drip coffee maker!?
Then today: There’s a reason that Dorothy’s farmhouse was blown clear out of Kansas. On our longest ride yet we faced 30 mph headwinds and smacking gusts from passing (rude!) 18-wheelers. It was not fun. But we did meet a funny Belgian guy named Wim who rode with us until I rode too fast for him. Just kidding – until I took so many breaks he couldn’t stand it any longer. But we finally made it to Eureka, before the pool closed for the day, too.
And now we’re sitting in the city park of Eureka with our big, happy bike trail family, comically loud frogs, relentless bugs, and all. As for Kansas, call me fickle, but I only like it when the wind’s blowing in the direction I’m traveling.

I hate wind – probably even more if I was heading in to it on a bike. You girlies are amazing.
