Who’s Who on the Trans American Trail

June 22, 2010

Because of the weird spacing of towns in Kansas, we’ve been on the same riding schedule as a couple other cyclists for the past few days.  And because all we ever do is ride bikes and then camp, we’ve gotten to know them pretty well.  Here’s a little introduction to our bike gang:

Bruce

Home: Dallas, Texas
Real Life Occupation: Starting his own business in the fall.  The details of this were a bit over our heads – something related to banks.
Preferred Cycling Attire: High-vis yellow
Favorite Touring Food: Cliff Bars and Gatorade Powder
Favorite Food to Cook in Real Life: Paella
Favorite Touring Pastimes: Stopping on the road to snap photos of historical monuments, finding wi-fi in towns.

Trent

Home: Greenville, South Carolina
Real Life Occupation: Runs the family construction business
Preferred Cycling Attire: Underwear (so much, in fact, that he would like to write a song about it)
Favorite Touring Food: Salad bar
Favorite Touring Pastime: Fixing flat tires on his 3-wheeler (he’s got a trailer)
Tattoos: Leave No Trace and “a couple others I just liked, but now I regret”

Wim

Hometown: Brussels, Belgium
Real Life Occupation: HR for infrastructure department of the Belgian govermnent
Preferred Cycling Attire: Snappy spandex suspenders
Favorite Touring Food: Kraft Singles and Grandma’s Oatmeal Cookies
Prior Experience: Climbing in South America, running marathons, bike touring in California and Iceland
Biggest Frustration with America: Not being able to buy beer on Sundays
